yesterday I added a CAI (gonna put a pod on soon though), when I was removing the existing setup , I pulled out a 'container' (big black box) of such, just wondering what the hell it was used for, was it to balance the air or something?

There is a good three page article in the Jan 1999 issue of Fast Fours & Rotaries regarding intake setups.
It says that not only does the resonator reduce noise, but also creates some sort of negative pressure. The article describe it like a turbo running negative boost (eg -.75 psi).
Also says you shouldn't use flexi pipe that has a corigated inside (should be smooth) as this will disturb the air flow. Suggests you use drainage pipe with smooth bends.
