Newbie to this forum so hello to everyone! Just bought a '99 N15S2 SSS auto (my wife can't drive :( ) a few weeks ago now and am amazed at how much petrol its going through!?

I've been running it on Optimax since I bought it (is this overkill?) and am getting between 400 - 470kms on a tank. Anyone out there care to share their fuel consumption figures?. Is this normal for an auto SR20?? It seems a lot to me but I've come from a 97 Barina GSi (which did 550 - 600kms on a similar sized tank).

BTW the car only has 28K kms on the clock.

Thanks for any help!

yeah they chew the gas dude. SO MUCH POWER..he he

i have a manual and am anveraging about 500km per tank atm. i have got 550 + a few times...driving it like nana. running on optimax.

but yeah what ur getting is about right..ask in2vegas about the auto...she has the same car...

i know mum and dads 1.8 astras are only getting about 450..pretty lame if u ask me!

Driving like splash's nana i get about 550-580 if i race it around everywhere i get maybe 380-400.

Mines a manual n15s2 though.

yeah that sounds about right.. it all depends on how you drive it tho... i average about 400 per full tank... damm gotta stop thrashing it :D but i love the power so much from going from a civic hahahah :Flipa:

That 470km I got was last weekend heading from Canberra to Sydney @ a constant 120 ... looks like thats the best I'm gonna get out of a tank :(. Any of you have an opinion on using Optimax versus standard unleaded? I've always used Optimax in my cars, but that was more out of necessity. I know Shell will tell you it cleans your engine and all that but is there any advantage in using it in a SSS that (by my understanding) gets minimal gain from it?

I would of through that you would get more than 470km a tank especially highway/freeway driving.

I get around 10l/100km (500 a tank) and thats hard driving.

Tell them in your next service.

Are you sure that the 470 is from the full 50 ltre's, dont judge by your fuel gauge because they are known to have problems.

Do you drive an auto or manual cargle? I generally don't drive this car hard so like yourself am puzzled at how much petrol its going through. Is the tank really 50 litres too? I thought it was closer to 40 but could be mistaken?

I drive an n14 q 2.0ltre manual.

I know the tank in my car and other n14, I do not know if this is that same as the n15 but I would assume so, a 40 litre tank is pretty small, especially for a 2.0litre car.

If I'm driving nicely I get upto 550km. (city)

But you need to make sure if that 470km is from a full tank.

Next time you fill up take note of how many litres went in, if you put in say 40 litre it means you stilll have 10 litres left , which means you still have at least another 100-150 km left in the tank.

I'm pretty sure last time I filled up it cost me about $40 ... I mean I don't run the car til its bone dry but I'd be surprised if the tank was over 43-45 litres ... anyway I'll check for sure next time or it might just be in the owner's manual somewhere?

Anyone got any thoughts on Optimax vs Standard unleaded? From what I've read most people seem to be running Optimax or an equivalent ... but is there any performance (or even fuel ecomony) advantage in spending a few extra bucks everytime you fill up?

if you read on the se-r.net page there is a mention that some problem causes bad fuel efficiency, theres also a fix there.

we do not have optimax over here in the west.

However I use ultimate basically the same, I found that I get a smoother ride and better fuel consumption over standard unleaded and premium unleaded.

Best way to judge actual fuel consumption is to fill her up Run it around until the light starts to come on, drive in and fill up again.

Then simply divide the kays by the number of litres, should get about 10-11kays per litre with average driving.

Some examples are I sometimes get 350-360 out of 40 litres arround town:devil: which equates to 9 kays per litre

when I do a bit of highway and drive like Sim I get

400-440 per 40 litres which is about 11 kays per litre

So there you go, this is for manual.

Also the auto will use more on a city cycle due to gearing and also lost power through the transmission

However, on a highway cycle you will get better than the manual due to the car revving slightly lower at highway speeds (100km/h)

Hope that helps

Neill

P.S. Please note that the above is will current mods on either BP Ultimate or Ampol Gold - similar fuel and better than that detergent Optimax craup

very helpful thanks neill and everyone else! :). Agree with you on the BP Ultimate but theres only 2 places in Canberra that stock it ... both of which are nowhere near me. Ampol Gold? errr no thanks :)...

I did some research on the fuel economy of my SSS (n15s2 man) and compared different fuels.

i did the testing over a few months, first with ulp then with optimax. covered almost 7000 kays.

with ulp, i get 10.7669 km per litre

with optimax, i get 11.3134 km per litre

the only accurate way to measure your fuel economy is do what neill said, fill up, record the amount you put in and how far you travelled on it. repeat this a heap of times and you'll get an accurate figure.

anyways, some maths:

every litre, I travel an extra .5465km with optimax

so to go the same distance i have to put in 1.0508L of ulp for every 1L of optimax

therefore, to be cost effective, optimax needs to be less than 5.08% dearer than ulp.

looks to me as if shell's ads are full of crap when they talk about saving money by using optimax (for an SR20 anyway)

say the price of ulp is 75c a litre (life is great in the sunshine state)

75cpl*0.0508 = 3.81c per litre

when it is 75cpl, optimax needs to be cheaper than 78.81cpl, for shell to be telling the truth, where optimax is typically 8c a litre more expensive

i guess its fair to say i have not taken into consideration the cleaning agents in the fuel, or the performance gains, but you can't put a price on that.

hope i didn't fry anyone's brain with that crap.

Ummm Sir Dick of no Knowledge read properly, Ampol Gold is basically Ultimate you iduit, tests have revealed that it is cleaner than Optimax so there you go... there are only 2 main refinieries in Australia.....

And you know how anal I am with only putting Ultimate in my car, its a rare occassion that I put Gold in, ie when I nearly run out of fuel....

Hi Dom,

To be honest mate I have no idea what the tyre pressures should be on this car? I just got new standard sized tyres all round 2 weeks ago so havent bothered to check them yet.

What pressures is everyone running?

And out of interest does anyone know how many litres the fuel gauge is actually indicating as full? Filled up again yesterday (until the 'click') and I swear it took no more than 43 - 45 litres...

its a 50 litre tank, but they always put more in.

quote from nissan salesman: "once the light stays on, you've got 60 kilometres"

i wouldn't want to test his theory though.

my fuel sender unit is FUBAR. going by the gauge, I get ~250km from Full to Empty, but mysteriously, I can only put 25L back in?

Ive never seen the fuel light go on, mainly cause im not game enough to run the tank below E. Im pretty sure my NX has a 50L tank too.

The tank is definitely 50 litres. After purchasing my car, I was puzzled by the fact that the gauge would show empty after only ~300kms. I would fill up and only fit ~30l in it. So I decided to risk running a bit of crud through the engine and find out. Almost 150kms after the warning light/beep had started coming on I ran out. I put 5l in it from the jerry can I'd been lugging around and drove to the nearest petrol station (about 500ms down the road) and filled it with another 45l.

The gauge is pretty annoying. It seems to vary its inaccuracy a fair bit. The last tank of petrol it hit empty at just over 200kms. I filled up after 300kms and got 30l into it. So I'm being 'warned' that I've only got 30l left!

hahaha, ino this is a lil off topic but my mums got ona them new Kia Cerato's...

55litre tank...takes 60litres till it starts pouring over at ya feet, on standard petrol on highway with a lil city driving, the light comes on at around 600km(mixture of flogging it off lights and zipping around and easy driving)...on vortex ive had it to 690km under the same kind of driving...the thing is a 2.0litre 105kw like the sr20(cept a pieca shit by comparison cos its korean!) and around town on a full tank of premium will manage 500-550 on a tank, so maybe its cos the car is newer??

Im just worried (as im actually looking for a N14 2.0l ) that it will go thru a significant amount more petrol on the highway than the kia, im planning a trip to port maquarie(if i ever find a decent 2.0l N14) which is a good 450km from wollongong, does anyone reckon ill make it there on a tank if i go easy on it...maybe halfway back?? lol

Oh and will i be able to stuff 60litres in it?

I dont wanna take the kia up there,i mean sure its a nice looking car(got a body kit, mags, spoiler n perfect paint job) but its got no class! lol

Any help appreciated!:D

Especially when the thread is like 4 years old...

By the way, GA16 FTW... I just got 753km's to a tank, mixture of city driving, and highway driving! :)
Previous to that I got 680km's to a tank, and the best I've got is 767km's, on the way back from Melbourne.

I got 800km+ out of a tank once, get a good one and they're soooooooooooooooo economical.
