Hey people. I'm after a short shifter for a Series 2 N15 SSS. I've looked at a couple of websites and paying $390 for a Nismo short shift kit sounds a bit steep for my budget. Has anybody with a seires 2 N15 got a short shift that is not a Nismo item or something that they have conjured up themselves. Prices for these modifications would be nice too. Thanks:thumbsup:
Cheers

Yeah, i'm after the same thing you are. Everything seems too expensive. The DIY short shifter on the site seemed O.K until all of these other adjustments had to be made to the car so it worked properly.
If you try it and it works, could you let us know, i would be really interested to find out.
Otherwise, i guess i'll have to resort to chopping the gear shifter in half with a hacksaw

i cut about 2 1/2 inches off my shifter with a hack saw about 2 weeks ago. Made quite a surprising difference. The shift feels alot tighter and you can feel it slot into place really well. Not quite as good as a short shift kit, but it was free....:D

I found the N15 sss shifter way to long, and it looked :gay:
If you bend the top of the skirt down inside itself it wont look so squashed.

Is that a short shifter Spectrix?
What did you do? Or is it just stock with the boot folded down?

When i built my short shifter i only added 1 - 1 1/4 inches shortened the shift really well and i didn't have any clearance problems. I also took 3 inches off the top and rethreaded it to suit a different gear knob.
My father drove my car not long ago and has been bugging me ever since to do it on his n15 s2 SSS so i had a look and there is no reason the same setup won't work again..

How do you get the shifter out? I cant remove my gear knob so if i hacksaw it off, how will i get it back on?

All these options sound pretty good, thank you for your help, now its a matter of choosing one that will suit me. Thanks for your input fellas, much appreciated. Makes that $390 for a Nismo kit sound over priced (by about $380).
Cheers:thumbsup:

Is that a short shifter Spectrix?
Well it's short and it's a shifter but no..
I removed the gear knob as described in other posts and cut the shifter down about 50mm. The metal worker dude said it would be difficult to rethread it without taking it out of the car so I got him to drill out the inside of the knob instead - to the same diameter as the shifter.
I glued the knob back on, though it compressed the skirt so much that I needed to modify it a little, hence the folding trick.
The result is good.. the shifter is visably shorter and the throw has been reduced.

So you didnt actually weld anything beneath the pivot?

Nope.. at the time i couldn't see any way of removing it from the car.
Rewelding the control arm shortens the throw,
while cutting the stick shortens the throw AND the stick height.
I like the look of a short stick.. like an MX5.. so that way worked for me, and I didn't have to weld anything (or stamp on bits to bend them so they wouldn't foul the control arm) either. :silly:

So whats the shift like? Is it quicker? Is it more clunky tho?

Well as far as rushing a shift, I notice splash can change quicker than me with his friggen enormous oem shifter... heaps of leaverage.
And yes I notice the gates more. It would be the same effect as fitting a short shift kit. Actually not as bad.. driving around a mates wrx sti with a short shift kit.. its mega short and mega clunky.. take a bit of getting used to. Course it's worth to hear the 'blat blat blat blat vrooooooooooommm-p-tshhhhhsssshsh.
Anyways, The thing that made me want to change the sss one was the huge throw.. I got sick of moving my arm so far just to change gear. Same with my sister's corolla, same with my dad's liberty. Just don't get carried away and cut too much off.
