just having a closer look at the intake system and it looks like there's a second resonator after the AFM - is that correct? Can it be removed and the hole plugged?
I'm keen to start freeing up my intake some more, getting a unifilter element tomorrow and I will make a better intake pipe to my airbox when I get the chance. Will also look at the AFM, not sure if it has mesh screens that can be easily removed or not but no big deal either way.

I've got a friend who did this on a N14SSS he used an axle cap off a trailer wheel (put it in with the hollow end facing out) didn't notice any major difference but he did a lot of other work at the time. I also did mine, I just butchered the old resonator box (cut off the old inset section and plastic welded a piece of the resonator box over the end. I noticed a very slightly better tone on the engine and also a better sucking noise from the pod. Give it a go it can't hurt and it's cheep.

I did this to on my car. It made it sound slightly different but it also lost power down low by the seat of the pants meter:rolleyes:

Because that resonator is tuned to your intake pipe, I wouldnt recommend taking it off unless you modify the entire intake... One of the 4 cylinder magazines had an article where they plugged the hole with a lynx deodorant lid and they lost power and recommended keeping the resonator on unless you replace the intake pipe completely

as far as i know thats actually an emissions device (charcol canister) rather than a resonator?
edit; just checked workshop manuals, if you are talking about the canister off to the firewall side of the intake pipe after the afm, it is definitely the charcol canister. i cant see any benefit in disconnecting it, it works in tandem with the egr valve.. from a quick skim it looks like gas going from the zauhst back to the intake via the egr is cleaned in the charcol canister.. interesting.

nah there is a resonator in there.. it has a fairly large pipe that comes off and bends down to the resonator box underneath the intake pipe. I've had it out before and its just a hollow plastic box.

definitely a resonator. Anyway CBF removing it unless I was going to go to a pod and CAI I guess. Chucked a unifilter panel in the airbox and it's good enough for now.
