haha, welcome to my nightmare yesterday afternoon!

There is a little spill basin under the oil filter, so don't worry about it spilling everywhere.

When you get it loose and start pulling it out, rotate it vertically so any oil left inside doesn't spill.

seriously, that is possibly the worst place i have ever seen it. Well its alot worse than my first car :P which had the filter at the front of the block in a rather easy to reach from top and bottom location.

so how much oil am i putting into it. Ive been told about 3.5L so i am just wanting to clarify.

Yeah it is terribly positioned, I was just told that it was originally made as a RWD motor, so it wasn't a problem.

so does anyone have a easy way to remove it? id rather not resort to putting a screwdriver through it. as i cant get my oil filter removal tool in there. (chain type)

there is another removing tool... its kinda got 3 little arms that grip the filter and you use a socket to undo it

hmmm i've see a tool with 2 short rods and a flat piece of rope attaching them, you twist the rod and it tightens the rope and grips the filter. Its a pain, best not to do it up tight with a tool if you do get it off, I tighten it by hand as tight as possible, that way, I can always get it off. Unless someone will say its not good tightening by hand.

I usually use a large waterpump plier to turn it.
Regarding the RWD mounting of the SR 20 as in the 200SX S13 and S14 the filter is located just above the oil pan and if that placing had been kept for the FWD transmount u would have to remove the driveshaft each time you'd change the oil.
But yeah its pretty much a funny location and it takes som training to remove it smoothly ;)

A friend of mine resorted to the screwdriver removal method, hit it a bit too close to the base and hit the thread for the filter instead of going through it and clean snapped off the whole oil filter thread thing. cost him a bunch too get it fixed to haha - dont do that !!

Well..I guess that ought to be accounted on the department of people that should consider letting the workshop to the whole thing from the beginning..

The EU version takes 3.4 incl filter. 3.2 whitout..but as always. fill 3.0 liters, start it, let the oil lamp go black, stop it, wait 0.5minute, check the oil and top up til the max-mark.
But of course..all of this was kindergarden knowledge, or what?

Althoug I don't quite understand what's the problem of not knowing the exact amount of oil. After all it's just to take it halv a litre at the time and keep an eye on the stick. when the stick shows max, start it, stop it, and top up.

it took 3.5 and is sitting just below the max mark.

I use a screwdriver to remove mine, but just tap it very gently to put a dent in the outer rim. then once there is a dent you can use the screwdriver at a bigger angle to loosen it off. I've never managed to puncture the filter yet. once it is loose do it by hand.

on my car (N14), lift up the power steering resevoir (sp?) and get your hand under the hoses for better access.

yeah i'm presuming the pusar is the same as the nx... the little man in japan sure didn't think about servicing when he decided that'd be a good spot to put the most regularly changed part on the engine... like Maxi SSS said it helsp to take the power steering resavour off the bracket and push it to one side and just do it by hand. and to answer u'r question about the amount of oil the book says 3.3L with fillter but i tend to find it takes about 3.5L

I use those gripping pad things that you use to open jars with, i cut a 1" section and wrap it around the filter, that usually gives me enough grip to be able to undo and remove it by hand. Also when putting the new one on make sure you lube the seal up with some fresh engine oil, will make it eaier to get off.

Dunno. Couldnt remember that you were from Norway as I was posting so I selected the first mid/northern european language which came to mind (excluding the obvious Russian!).

Sorry.:o
