Anyone else here use Optus cable and have you heard about the new download caps  and the throttling of connection speed once this limit is reached. It is to be throttled to 28.8K/s. :thwap: BTW: the standard $69 plan now gives you only 3GB. Not that i would ever reach this limit but it would have been nice to know that i initially signed up for an unlimited account ?

Hmmmn...
That sounds a little like the Telstra affair where their unlimited accounts came under scrutiny because apparently when they said 'unlimited' they actually meant *not really unlimited at all* as it's subject to the 'acceptable use policy', and Telstra think downloading anything over 3G in a month is unacceptable.
This is appalling when they hoax you into getting cable for the online movies and lightning fast downloads in the first place.
They are so :gay: :vomit: :silly:

Lucky I just signed up with them before the cap takes place. At least I'll get 12 months with no capping.
Ive heard of people ringing up and resigning on a 12 month contract to avoid the cap for another 12 months.
Cheers

Yes but after that date the Netstats monitor functions as below:
If you decide to remain on your existing Lightning Fast plan, from 1 August there will be a change made to My NetStats. From this date, the My NetStats "Average Customer Usage" will be permanently fixed to 1,120MB over any rolling 14 day period. You can still use up to ten times the Average Customer Usage (ie. 11,200MB) for each usage period, however if you exceed this limit your service may be suspended and/or terminated. Click here to view the new Acceptable Use Policy outlining these changes. So i guess you still have a theoretical 24GB/ month so it might be worthwhile ringing up and resigning the contract.
cheers

Yes it does suck, I'm pretty well screwed by it, and even tho I work there the staff discount is practically nil!
Oops, did I say I work there? :p
I suppose on the plus side of things if you do go over you don't get charged extra , so no massive internet bills at the end of month, and they also don't suspend your account unlike the current system, so people can still access those important e-mails/forums/etc and not have to wait 14 days to get reconnected.
In light of that a 3.6KB/s speed limitation doesn't sound too bad. I bet plenty of Telstra Cable/DSL users would rather this type of system.

You can get another 12 months.....if you add another Optus service to your exixting setup. My mate just did his yesterday. Signed up on a Choices 5 plan and is having his internet contract extended for 12months.....excluding him from the new plans until June next year.

you work for them ! hahahaa
thats cool, but can u clarify something you said they will throttle it to 3.6K/s are u sure. Because this is from the email they sent me
" Usage exceeding the monthly data allowance will be 'speed limited' to the maximum speed of a 28.8kbps dial-up modem. In practice this will be a data speed between 20kbps to 28.8kbps.
"
Why wasn't it 5.6K/s ?

huh.. my frien said he tried to apply for the 12 month and got knocked back.. *shrugs*
anyway.. quick lesson in data transfer
28.8k connection is 28,800 kilo BITS per second
there's 8 bits in a byte
28800/8 = 3600
3600 kilo bytes per second = 3.6 k/sec

About a week after the online newspapers and Whirlpool (http://www.whirlpool.net.au) published the new plans that Optus later confirmed we were flooded with calls with people wanting to renew contracts.
It didn't take long for manglement to work out the loopholes and seal them tighter than a fish's arse.
Basically the only way you can get another 12 months is to apply for either Choices 4 (bundle Phone and Cable Internet together) or Choices 5 (same as Choices 4 with Optus Vision).
But considering *everyone* is doing this it may be too late now (read: backlog).

You guys should think yourselves lucky.
I've just built a house and there is no access to Optus or Telstra cable internet. :bawlink:
You would think in a brand new estate that Telstra would have the brains to lay cable wouldn't you??

i think that laying cable has nothing to with telstra it is more up to the estate developers.

Estate developers don't organise infrastructure - how are they gonna make money from it???
Telstra puts down cable where it feels it will make mony from it - and I can tell you they'd make plenty of money off this street.
What shits me is they don't lay cable etc. at the time when it is cheapest to do it, and then they have the nerve to broadcast advertisements on how fantastic it is to have this new highspeed technology and that everyone should get on it.
I wonder why I bought Telstra shares sometimes.
Anyway, OptusCable kicks Telstras shitty service into next week.

Mate, I am in the same boat. Have spoken to Optus and Telstra. Neither of them could give me anything than "We will not be laying anymore cables. For pay T.V. you will need to get a dish (which I have) and for high speed net access, you will need to look at ADSL."
I know a guy who works for Telstra, confirmed all this.
Bitch thing is, Foxtel sold off a HEAP of channels to Optus. If you have a look at the channels Optus customers get vs Foxtel, I think it was like Optus get 14 channels, Foxtel 5. Foxtel make you pay for the extra channels, Optus, you get most in the package. I wanted to swap to Optus, but Nooooooo, they don't do dish's!!! :thwap:
Screwed up IMO!
