It's in Lonnie, based in the "Thyne Building" in York Street from memory. The school of fine furniture is connected to the University of Tasmania.

http://www.utas.edu.au/asff/

They have a reputation for doing some amazing stuff. Their new "academic director" used to work in the same area of the Uni that I'm in and he's a really good, hands on kind of person.

You'll find the best timber down here but don't tell Gunns that they might take it all...oh wait they already have.

Let us know if you come down and we'll give you a tour of Launnie ;)

This is "O Week" for the Uni, so it may take a little longer than normal for them to get back to you - everyone is flat out with all the new students on campus and so on. I guess it would be the same for the School of Fine Furniture people.

CAvectorsss: good point made re the timber industry here. Rhys will probably weep when he sees what the Tasmanian Gunnerment does with our forests!

ok, so i will wait a week or two for a reply. that is fine not as though i will missout on a spot this early, applications arent efven open yet.lol.

i am about 99% sure this is what i wana do, the other 1% is convincing my parents to let me go to tasmania to live for a few years. lol.

thanks everyone.

Heh: emphasise the low cost of living, low crime rate etc if your parents need convincing. The air fares have come down a lot in recent times too.

I've heard that the School of Fine Furniture is moving premises soon: to the same campus as the School of Architecture. It won't make much difference to you, but car parking should be easier and cheaper (they're in the middle of the City at the moment).

If I can help you out at all, give me a yell. If they drag their heels getting you the info on the course and how to enrol, I can always go in there in person and get an information pack for you.

Rhys Cooper

thankls for the help.
shred: my parents are like "but it is so far away, do you have to go?". the answer to them is YES, as i want to do this.lol. thanks for offer on the information pack, but how will you get it to me??
i am going to apply for one of the 4 scholarships on offer, worth $2500 hopefully f i am successful, that will definatly help out with tools and the course costs. but with only 4 on offer i dont really like my chances.

thanks again.

Australia Post (not very original, am I). Good luck convincing the parents, and getting a scholarship.

CAvectorsss: Yes, it's opposite the Bathurst St car park / OfficeWorks. I used to do some work for TAFE when they had the building - it's sort of L shaped and goes through from York Street to Bathurst Street behind the tyre place on the corner of the block. The building has some history - one of the TAFE guys told me all about it once, but I forget now; it's been nearly 10 years!

ok thye replied. 20 spots are available each year, cost falls under the band 1 so about $5000 a year. and as of next year they are offering a full degree which is 3 years. the required TCE is 65, but what is a TCE? we only have UAI. are they the same? if not how do they differ?

thanks

TCE = Tasmanian Certificate of Education. Same idea as UAI, but I'm not sure how the actual scores compare.

65 is pretty average score it will get you into about anything except medicine and engineering, UAI scores would be about the same i gather. i reckon uai scores will be equal to a tce if not slightly higher

Rhys Cooper
16th March 2008, 06:28 AM
yeah well i am aiming for a UAI of 75 or higher, so i think it should be ok forthe course.

you should be fine, let the launceston boys know when you here so they can show you around abit!

if you come down to hobart also let us know so we can show you around, but i reckon if your aiming for 75 UAI you'll get in no worries at all.

as for the car, i would bring it down with you. you'll be here for a few years and not having a car down here is horrible. you'll need something to get you around and keep you sain!!!

well best of luck mate! i might have to make the trip up to launceston to get a few boys to meet you at the airport :D

Rhys Cooper
20th July 2008, 01:34 PM
well just had the trip to launceston.

the uni has great facilities and is being relocated to iveresh (i think thats how you spell it...i know it is over a bridge.lol)

anyway, i was took a few photos of my major projects from school and simon ancher (director) said i would likely be accepted.

we asked a bunch of questions and he gave us a tour. all i can say is some of the work is amazing.

so i am aiming to be moving to launceston next year, but if i cant get enough funds/organise stuff, the year after will be fine., but am defiantly wanting to go next year.

now i need to put this out there, i guess and EIO:

i am kinda starting to organise some stuff for the move. so i need to organise accomodaiton. my parents dont want me staying on campus (niether do i), and they dont want me to be renting with a bunch of kids i dont even know..

my parents know some people so they are gonna ask around to see if any people they know have a spare room.

if anyone has or knows of someone with a spare bedroom (or cabin type thing) in the launceston area give me a yell.

thanks alot

Rhys

You came to Lonni and didn't get in touch with any PGAers? We could have shown you some of the nice driving roads around here (they have Targa in Tassie for a good reason!).

The place over the bridge is called "Inveresk" and the facilities should be heaps better there than at the current place. It used to be part of TAFE a few years back. The main Uni campus is actually a bit further out in a suburb called "Newnham".

If you don't want to stay in general student accommodation, there would be other options. I'm sure you could find some nice little old lady who rents out a back room or something like that.

Rhys Cooper
20th August 2008, 02:16 PM
i applied last night...now i wait...

we have looked into some student accomodation places....roughly $120 a week, no meals. but thats ok, aslong as i can find a job that pays more then 250 a week i should be fine. probably gonna have to sel the car though if i wanna go next year. :(

I'm sure they'll accept you Rhys - enthusiasm alone should get you over the line!

I wouldn't sell the car, if I were you. The public transport here is woeful, so unless you live within walking distance of the Uni, or fancy riding a bike...

d-Z1R3
20th August 2008, 06:20 PM
bring the car down, i am sure you'll be able to find a cheap place to live! rent is alot cheaper here than some may think!

Rhys Cooper
20th August 2008, 08:43 PM
yeah as much as i want to bring the car down...i may not be able to affordto go next year unless i sell it. :(

but i have to wait and see.

we are looking into campus accomodation, about $120 a week. no meals included but we called some person at the uni and thye said ti is all going to be changing next year with how the 'meal system' works at the uni.

i reckon if i can save up about $3000 without selling my car, and if i find a job staright away i could robably keep the car..... but i think if i sell it it will be a very last minute thing.

and i just got an email back from the director and he was saying how the new building is coming along, and how he is looking forwardto seeing me next year...so hopefully i get in.

he said when we went and had a meeting with him, that if i applied he would gladly have me at the school, so that is a big plus for me.

now i play the waiting (and saving) game....

thanks for the support/help fellas, means a lot

Congrats on being offered a position. I thought they didn't normally do this until December / January. Nice to know that you are "in" this early.

Think twice before buying a car in Tassie. There is less competition in the Tas second hand car market. You'll find people expecting (and getting) silly prices for older cars here. Mind you, if you wanted to sell your current car, that could work for you :-)

Rhys Cooper
2nd September 2008, 04:39 PM
thanks shred. yeah it is better to now this early, mum is shocked.lol. i think it is because i had a meeting with the director, and he said if i was to apply he would gladly accept me.

yeah not to sure about the car yet, may just end up taking car down and using that....but that wonty be for ages.

thanks again shred

i would, the public transport system here would shock you to death!!!

you'll need a car down here trust me! if you need to work you'll often require a car to get to work! plus its always handy to have a car in tassie, as bus schedules are apalling here, i useto catch the bus to school, and after i got my license i haven't been on a bus again! trust me missing one bus and waiting for another will kill you!!! 30mins intervals ftml!!!

Rhys Cooper
2nd September 2008, 07:53 PM
yeah probably gonna keep mine, but just waiting to organise other stuff first.

probably gonna move first without car and see if i really need it(more then likely), and if i do, dad, mum and my sister are gonna drive it to melbourne get the boat over give me the car and fly back.

but i am keen as for this course, just what i wanna do.

thanks

well, looks about 70% that i will be deferring for a year.

due to many reasons
1. i lost my job and only recently got a new one.
2. wont have enough funds to support myself in time.
3. i dont want to be a financial burden on my parents

so it is not 100% at this stage, but looking possible, but alas i will get there in 2010.

see you all in 2010...or maybe 2009 if i go for another holiday down south, which is likely :)

Rhys Cooper
12th December 2008, 03:34 PM
well 100% wont be going next year, put in my deferral yesterday

not to worried though, now i will have enough funds to get there and pay for 1 years worth of accommodation...

also gives me time to save and buy a manual car to bring :)

see you all in 2010
