What is everyones opinion of Sony head units and car audio in general.

some of their higher range head units are OK(ish), but I wouldnt touch their speakers or subs with a 30 ft pole :p

JVC have some cheap ones out now that have mp3 support.

One of my mates got one for his car.. $369 from JB Hifi. Nothing fancy but it works pretty well.

That If you are not going to get JVC for the better features ie. Mp3 playing, then get a Kenwood.

what does everyone have against sony
i have heard that their head units are all right, but i know their speakers suck. You would think that they would be good becasue of their good reputation in all other audio

"cant complain" doesnt equal good and it isnt really a convincing argument IMHO... :)

it's like all the people who sing the praises of Windows but have never used Linux or MacOS before...

anyway.... good and bad is so subjective.. how i look at it is... Sony is cheap and loud... good for those who dont know better.... but you're not gonna set any SPL records running sonys...

but if you ever plan on upgrading.. dont get sony.. you're gonna have a helluva hard time selling them... they've got too much of a "name" attached to them in car audio circles...

for the money i'd look towards elsewhere.. like kenwood.. their headunits arent flashy but they perform... a lotta people like pioneer for their funky displays... and JVC has a lotta mp3 headunits out there (i think the cheapest might be in ya range)

My preference for head units is Alpine.My current one is like $400 but its good value.I have a sony sub and its alright for 160 bucks,its no mtx or kicker sub but it does the job.I also got Alpine splits in the front and they were the best 300 bucks i ever spent !

well everyone thinks alpine is expensive but it really isnt that bad if u compare it to panasonic and that sought of shit.

some dick head i know has a alpine head unit some us audio spilts in the front and a super cheap 12" sub and a super shit amp.

to tell u the truth my clarion cd player and just my pioneer 6 by 9's
had more bass they were clearer and it wasnt even powered by an amp. didnt he feel like a dick head. mean while if u c the car he drives u will understand its a 81 model laser with his stock rims painted fluro green with chrome mag caps they look great.
personally i think anyone that has mag caps needs a head reconstruction they are ****ed in the brain.

back to stereos its a personal thing as well wateva u prefer and wat u can afford.

Pioneer head units are great!

I have had two pioneer head units and never had a problem with them. 4050 and currently the 9250.

Clarion isnt too bad either! I was seriously considering their 9675z model before I picked up the 9250.

Alpine head units are way over-priced in my opinion. But none the less, they are good quality and offer great sound quality as well.

Go to JB Hifi and listen to a few head units. It will surprise you of how important the HU is, and dont ever over look on smaller aspects of your setup as it will make a difference to the overall sound quality of your system!

I had a pioneer HU. It shat itself. took just under 2 months to get it back.

i had a clarion one had only one very minor problemm once it wouldnt eject the cd properly and i just went down and asked bout it and they sent it back and replaced the ejecting thingo and it only took a couple of days i cant complain didnt cost me shit to fix

If you have ~$400 to spend, check out an numbers 1,4,5,6 & 7.

I'd personally go for the Alpine though... (and i own a Pioneer....)

i cant complain with the sony head unit i have. i know fast fours and hot 4's magazines have done features on head units recently so if possible have a look through them. all depends on what features you want on your deck. dont really know about the speakers or subs as i have not heard them

well it doesnt matter now. I did end up buying a sony. It was on sale and it all the stuff i wanted so i bought it. It's pretty cool and havent had any probs yet.

my sony hu is good. its the fully remote one with the black screen and no buttons. i think its great anway

When i used to work at Autobarn, there was 2 brands that always came back. California Gold (duh) and Sony.

Problems with sone, besides having shithouse speakers, the tuners in their decks are crap.

I tested the Clarion DB215, Pioneer DEH1375 and base and top line sony in demo board to get an idea. All were used on the same antenna, power supply etc etc. inside our shop which is metal roof, this would give a good idea on the tuners.

The sony had alot of problems even getting slighest sounds. where as the clarion and pioneer done it with ease.


Oh and wait till it comes time to claim warrenty, with clarion and pioneer i could safley say to the customer 1 week usually and 2 weeks if they are all drunk.

Sony would take at least a month.

well i dont really use the tuner as much as the cd player, but i havent had any probs with it, it evens says the name of the stations on some stations, but it doesnt do it for some. Can anyone tell me why.

I paid like $800-$900 for it i think, can't remmeber, was a good one though, detach fdace (about standard these days), 4 RCA preouts, additional RCA sub out, seperate bass control for the sub line, internal cross over functions, cd text, HX DSP, 50wx4, lots of other crap like virtual sound stagging, and differnt choices for type, like rock, jazz etc, and you can make a custom one.

just stuff liek that .. damn car got run into so i sold it and bought my baby . . (SSS) that is . .
