View Full Version : Rev Limiters?

does anyone know if the pulsar Q's or SSS's have rev limiters?
I have only ever take my car to around 7000 - 7250, am a bit cautious about taking it to the redline without knowing if there is a rev limiter in place.

I read somewhere that the redline is 7800rpm but I have taken my SSS to 8000 on occaison :D

8000 then they probably dont come with rev limiters then,
it 'd be nice to have one installed though because me and my mate raced his wrx around wanneroo racetrack and down the straight the revs hit around 7800-8000 and sits bouncing and goes no higher.
helps u stay the right side of the red when in the heat of the moment.

they do have rev limiter's, its just before 8grand, it just kills the fuel when you hit it and you get a sudden loss of power, l believe ALL newish fuel injected cars have rev limiters otherwise everone would be blowing up motors.

All EFI cars have rev limiters.
the SSS SR20DE is limited to roughly 7800 - 7850 rpm.
The ONLY way you can rev a SSS to 8k is by downshifting. it WILL NOT rev to past the limit with the stock ECU/CHIP.
PS they love to sit up round that area too. Just like the Toyota 4AGE. they love / designed to sit about 5k rpm.
Just keep in mind that the rev limiter is there to PROTECT the motor. if it was not safe for you to rev it that high then nissan would NOT have made it that way.
dont be affraid of it.. if yo uaint gunna rev it then you may as well have brought a 1.8Q

great thanks for that Shane, that makes me more confident in driving it harder than I already do.
the pulsarQ car is really my first car that has actually got a decent amount of power and that has actually had a tacho!!, so when I see that needle hitting over 7k I tend to get a little paranoid and change gears.
Speaking of ecu chips has anyone had them upgraded? are they worth it?

Cargle,
Im know you have your worries about how high you're revving your SR mate so here's my tale... I tend to change around the 4500 RPM mark driving around and when I'm being silly I change it just under 7500 and thats with no mercy. Its been like this for the past 3 years and still going ok with 190k.
I hope that reassures you that the SR is a pretty strong motor... I'm not saying go silly and thrash it everywhere but have some fun with it. At the same time being that I do drive it that way I do sewrvice it religously every 5k.
cheers,
Lance
Anyone have any updates on chips?

they are a strong little motor aren't they, that is why I went and bought a 2.0ltr pulsar because I had heard some many great things about them.
with regards to the chips, I was wondering if anyone had upgraded their computer chips in their cars, you can have them replaced which is supposed to bring kw upto 112 and torque to 199 but they do cost around $900

if you're considering a powerchip, have a read of these two articles
:
http://www.autospeed.com/A_0402/page1.html (part one)
http://www.autospeed.com/A_0408/page1.html (part two)
:
after reading that it seems to me that powerchip are pretty good at spinning bullshit.. and not so good and avoiding getting caught spinning it.

thanks for that bit info Dan,
I wasn't really considering it, just wanted to learn a little more information about them, curious, however it seems from these articles that you would want to do alot of research before you went ahead with it, beause that Wayne guy seems to be quite unsure about certain things.

On my '92 aussie SSS it seems to cut out right on the 7500rpm redline, and does it quite harshly when in 1st gear (like hitting the brakes)

yeah i have had the same thing as AussieN14 in my aus spec Q...
the limiter hits hard as and scares you a bit the first few times.
and as my mechanic said (who also has an SR20, DET tho) he is yet to see one of these babies blow up or be damaged in any way apart from shear stupiditiy..

Yeh, i've heard somewhere (don't ask where, can't remember) that standard SR20 engines can rev to 9000rpm easy without any problems.
Would be nice to try.............. on someone else car :)

Hmmn.. I find the stock Sr20 with stock exhaust gets a bit wheezy after 6500 - I only bother going up to redline if I'm stitching someone up and they're quick enough to make me push it. I don't think the stock exhaust flows enough to warrent revving it anywhere near 9000rpm even if you did bypass the rev limiter.
On the other hand if you had cams and a well setup exhaust I'm sure the Sr20 would be up for revving that high for short periods atleast.

i have herd this too but if you look at the design of the valve gear on an SR20 i cant see it handling anymore than 8 - 8.5k max
you have to remeber that it still running the rocker arm design rather than the bucket and shim like on the 4AG or CA18 which are alot more stable at higher rpm than the rocker design.

Shane, what is Nance's car like near the redline?
My dads liberty had a cut-out at 6500 but it felt like it wanted keep going to like 8000 or something.
twincam16
10th April 2002, 10:57 AM
it revs freely all the way to the cut out at 7800 rpm. if i could i would let it run a bit longer say to 8100 or maybe 8200 but with the stadard valve gear i dont think there would be any point going higher. just more risk of breaking something.
for example going up MT Coo-tha is a pain sometimes cause u leave it in second and just go hard into corners but your hitting the limmiter before you know it... mainly cause i am concentrating on the road than the tacho. if i could get that extra 400 rpm it would mean that i probably would not need to switch into 3rd and if i did i would be at a better rpm when i have to... have never seen any reason to exit 3rd and goto 4th while up cootha thoo

Yeah.. end of 2nd gear is just over 100km/h.
I hit the limiter in first once when was stiching up an MX6 Turbo from the lights. Bad feeling.. but I was about to change anyway so I still got into 2nd OK and got ahead.
But yeah it would be nice to free up the last 1500 rpm before the cutout ...
Stock exhaust is nice and quiet though, and I like the 'sleeper' effect.

Actually, I've been beaten 3 times in the pulsar..
1st one was a Laser TX3 turbo.. that was real fast once it got on boost. Musta tweaked it a bit.
2nd time was a new volvo T5 Turbo. That was pretty embarrassing.
3rd time was this old looking white thing.. very loud. Don't know what it was.
Anyway the point is people come up and have a go every day and 9 times out of ten its a commie or falcon, and 10 times out of 10 I'm ahead before I even leave first gear.
And if it's a riced lancer they always scream pass me once I've slowed down haha.

hehe Lancers... i love it how they do that

Yeah .. maybe it somehow makes them feel better.
Had a lancer guy spit at me once after I beat him at the lights.. and I mean beat him by like 5 car lenths. So he eventually passes at about 90 clicks and I'm pretty sure he spat out the window.
Not sure what he was expecting.. His car looked great and sounded great but honestly, he should look for some excels.

You know the city to aspley run along gympie rd? This fella in a lancer one night kept having a go... on take offs it sounded like he was redlining and dropping the clutch and also flat changing into second (holding accelerator down during changes).
I was driving a WRX running 18 pounds of boost - something like 220kw at the flywheel so it wasn't much of a race hehe.

I love pulling up at the lights next to a riced up lancer, I usually sit back from the line giving them half a car advantage then kill them in first and again in second, then slow and wait for them to come screaming past.

Yeah , have to admit have canned quite a few lancers in my time and yes they fly past after you slowed down to the speed limite after getting a good 5 car lenths on them.
One night a 4AGE corolla white heap of shit wanted to race my in the pulsar and Leanne in her VTII manual V6, we got to about 150 neck and neck while poor old corolla was a good 8 car lengths behind still revving it, tried twice more with the same embarrasing effect.
Also has anyone else raced a manual V6, its just got an exhaust and k&n, but for the life of me I cannot beat it convincingly, get a nose in front and then she pulls me back. Also easy to get 5.0 and genIII v8's off the lights but they pull at the 120 mark, bummer, usually that is where I back off, they link they have one but by then they are pretty pissed a little silver thing can keep up with them

Even sometimes they are that quick off the line, especially when they break there piss week boxes and diffs he he.
Agree with that one shane, they really hate little N/A cars keeping up them, but once I see an intercooler and a decent exhasut, well that sometimes is a different story

Heh.. the rex I was driving was a '97 Sti, 3inch dump from turbo back, no Cat (Rally) CAI, huge intercooler and 18 pounds of boost. And Don't try and tell me they're not that quick cause it leaves everything for dead. To put it in perspective, a stock 206kw Sti runs 15.5 Psi and a smaller (2.25?) exhaust. This thing can spin all its wheels at once. The power is hard to comprehend, it pushes me back in my seat like going in a rocket or something. So scary but I can't take my foot off the throttle just the same. I've hardly taken off and I have to reach for second, then third. It revs to about 8500rpm. Totally balistic.

Tell him to have a run against my mates evoIII, 50TRY, 21 pounds, 300hp at all three wheels, then we will see a challenge.
Also anyone with a rex thinks its a weapon. As for the VX's shane, have a run against Leanne in her VT and see if you beat someone who I taught to drive

Heheh, its still a RICED LANCER.:Flipa:
But yeah, it's strange how mitsubishi can make all these crap cars and then totally get it right with the EVO series. The recent ones are superior to Rexes in many ways, particularly handling, and the go like the clappers in stock form.
I'll still buy a Rex though. (99 model) The sound of a worked boxer engine is music to my ears. :bounce:

If your mates car only has three wheels it wont be much of a challenge.
Actually, does he have one of those weird three wheeled cars that you see in shows like 'Heartbeat'? Must be hard to get all that power through just three wheels... Trike power slides!!!

Japanese commodore lol
It's getting a bit that way isn't it.
But at least they dont have 1940's style pushrod crappers.
And I loved them way before they were popular, ever since my Aunty got an impreza Gx in '94 and then Subaru annouced they were gonna stick the RS Turbo Liberty engine in one and drive it balistically fast down thin windy fire trails until it ended up on its roof, or had a whole wheel and suspension assembly ripped off and had to limp home on three paws to aviod a DNF penelty. Brilliant.

Niell is right about it being @ all 3 wheels. the front diff does not have an LSD, the rear does, which meas it can only give one front wheel power at a time...
oh and there are lancers them there are LANCERS!
the evo 3 is a ****ing weapon no matter which way u look at it!
Oh and i would love to race Leanne, but no license kinda pus a halt to that :bawlink:
