pulsardave: my g/f is great with my car! helping me wash it, always removing my faceplate and carrying it around for me, taking out the targa roof when driving, convincing me that my car isnt ugly and isnt a girls/hairdresser car (i drive a NX). Shes even going to help cover my boot install in vinyl (cause I cant wrap for shite).
She only cracks the shits when I race people or speed, or when I perv on other chicks :D.
Pulsar_Ti: whats wrong with 6.5s in the stock locations? I havent put mine in yet, and from measuring up the door trims 4 times, the only problem ill have is the depth, so im going for custom doorpods.

Just to reply on why 6.5" speakers are a pain in the arse.
We used 18mm mdf board between the door and speaker to clear the glass and to provide a rigid platform for the speaker. It was a pain to cut the inside of the door trim and speaker grille to make it look stock.Constant refitting of the trim but i guess it was worth it.Now all i have to do is move the tweeters into the door trims from the pillars.
thanx

Yeah Neill, me and danny pulled the rears out and they're 4 bolt.. thought they were 6 inch? Anyway The Jaycar 6" I wanted to put in wouldn't fit as they were too fat.. the stock speakers are very shallow so you'll need to find something compact to replace them.

Sorry guys, but for some reason, i dont get a hard on over car audio, I'd rather put the money under the bonnet. But i do have a ****in' filth home sound system with a toshi amp with 5.1 surround and DTS, Huge Dynamic Audio fronts (bottom cones are 10") MB Quart rears and centre and YAMAHA separately powered subbie that makes the whole house rumble!
Is that any consilaton?

and are you running a custom crossover?????????

AWK666

Are you referring to me? Thier Not 8" thier 6.5", i just gotta build a decent pod for them if they dont already fit in the Mount thats already in the door. Bsides, if the were to be 8" i would just build cutom pods and get a big ass **** off amp to run them.
im running the crossovers that came with the Sonys, i dont know the crossover frequencies, but it shouldnt matter as the response 6.5" have a freq. Response of 35Hs-3500Hz, Not too shabby for a tiny woofer.

AWK666... They are 8" "midbass" not "midrange". They play from about 60-70Hz up to around 350Hz. Also, they are 33mm deep, so they'd be pretty easy to fit behind the custom grills :) Pic 1 (http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/ubb/image_uploads/grill.jpg) - Pic 2 (http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/ubb/image_uploads/side.jpg)
Anyway, the 8's were going to be easy... The 4" splits needed custom kick panels made and a store was going to need my car for 1-2 weeks to make them and then charge me $500+... So i've sold the 8's and 4" splits.
My adjusted system.

jason... Clearly you don't know much about subs, but that's probably because a sales person or someone told you that.
Good quality subs will show no difference in lag/sloppiness, etc from their 10" up to their 15"... I'ts just a myth.
And if you were after SQ you would realise that SQ involves hear the whole frequency range... 10's just don't compare to the bottom end that a 15 can play down to.
As i'm building a "SQ" system, I have chosen a good quality 15" because I DO want good SQ :)
Whoever told you that BS is an uneducated idiot.

No active cooling as yet no... Methinks the heatsinks themselves are enough - after a few hours they are minimally warm to the touch.

Arma: Amps upside down... under carpet and MDF floor? Thats gotta be a recipe for disaster! Might be better to just take off the heat sinks, heat rises remember, they arent doing much good being underneath, which explains why they arent getting that hot, as the heat is transferring to the circuit board... it could get warped and bad things start to happen...

Bullion,
Cheapie (but still half decent) amps ($145 ea) -- just as an initial test... I'll see how they go over the next few months.
I might end up putting some air circulation through the front/rear sides of the spare tyre well - the amps were relatively warm after a 6 hr drive... (Though nothing even a fraction of melting solder or warping fr4)..
Dont know if you've ever pulled apart an amp before - but it would instantly die if you removed the heatsink -- all your output stage + power supply x'sistors/fets are bolted onto it.. Obviously the heatsink is performing its job - just yeah I agree the heat from it is rising up through the components and floor.

JL subs are great value for money, except the W7 series :) They have a good mix of sound quality and SPL.
Their amps are also excellent, but I think that they are very overpriced.
Don't know about Crossfire subs, but their amps are pretty good quality and value for money.
If they are your only options i'd go Crossfire amps and JL subs :)

Amp: Kicker 4 Channel (4x35)
Front: 2x 6.5" Phillips splits (that's two woofers)
Back: Pioneer three ways (little 4"'s)

All four subs off two channel (parallel and bridged), and the front splits off the other two channels.

I just got a JL12W3 D2 (dual 2ohm Vouice coil) and im happy as larry with it. Its F$#%ing loud and Kicks like a Mule. I paid 430 for it, Not installed of course. Just one thing you should be wary of that it doesnt say in any of the paperwork is that you have to run it in for ages (between 6-8 Hrs) before you can give it a touch up. But yeah, it sounds very clear. Definately reccomend them.
Tip, when you put in line the box with Dakron, give it a softer, cleaner sound.
Let us know what your choice is.

That's the sig I use on CAA :)
My boot changes every couple of months - new boxes :) I've got 6 sub boxes lying at the back of my garage...
And about those InHumans that InCar got in recently... Do they look much bigger than the JBL subs that look like rockets? Dunno the model number of the JBL subs but they're the biggest subs I've ever seen (depth-wise).
Mr N20
13th September 2002, 11:06 PM
i would probably say bigger dude they are mammoth subs and weigh heaps more than a Stroker or crossfire XT very similar in weight to a RFL but with decent sound quality but between you and me i polled one yesterday off a signat rom4 running only 250w rms i ran a sin wave and when it hit about 30-35hz she tapped out!!! was sooo funny!! but god damn it has excursion!! like easy 2-2.5in the bloody things look like they're going to leave the basket!!

those speakers look this biz. Whats their story? What sort of amp/enclosure to make em work good like? what source are you guys using to get your sin wave? I got me a little math in skool.
I think i'm geeting ready to leap into this car audio thing. I been treading on the edge of the pool for years..

Db jams is the cd we use to get the frequencies for comp
they work best in BIG boxes of course but will still be efficient in tight enclosures too, their power handling is more than most mono block amps put out!!! quad 1ohm voice coils too
we are building a couple of cars at the moment to run 4 of these with 4 alphasonic mono block amps per sub!! which is 3000w rms per voice coil- 12,000w rms per sub - 48,000w rms all up in car!!
hehe here we come 170db:eek:

48.000 watts root mean square?
power in watts = voltage x amps
or
power/volts = amps
48.000/12=4000
you are drawing 4000 amps?
not trying to be a smart arse but is the above right?
have I missed something?

14v dude the car runs 4 14v batteries
as for specs and prices well theres 2 series we have the inhumans and X1

The X1's are the next series down with double stack magnets, dual 4ohm voice coils, and power handling of just over 1000w rms rated.

I think I wanna pray at this alter!

I'm interested in the prices too, what batteries are they and what's their cost? are they lead acid?
Do they charge of your underbonnet altenator?
I think there are many peeps like me out there who wanna go further back don't know where to go!
A shop like jpsi with REAL know how will do very well me thinks.

All INHUMAN subs feature 32mm top plates with a triple-stack 300 oz. magnet! Each sub uses the same motor structure, giving them over 1" of excursion in one direction. They are available in Dual 2-ohm and Quad 1-ohm only. All INHUMANs are rated at 1200W RMS and up to 5000W for SPL "burps". Designed for every application known to man!]
The X-ONE entry level line features a cast basket with push terminals, double-stack 100oz magnet, 2.5" Dual 4-ohm or Dual 2-ohm voice coils with a stiff kevlar paper cone with medium foam surround. Ultra-smooth progressive roll spider alows up to 2" of p-p excursion. Each capable of handling 600W RMS, this subwoofer should fit your needs nicely, whether you're building a system for street-thumping or the competition circuit. Just like all of the Beyond Audio line this sub works in almost every application. This is one for the budget conscious SQ/SPL competitor.

I forgot to mention that the Orion 8's are in the front doors and the 5.25inch splits in the stock kickpanels (actually the midrange is behind the kickpanel with a hole cut into the kickpanel for sound to get through, with mesh insert filling the hole, and tweeter actually mounted on formed-up corner of the kickpanel).
Someone already said earlier in this thread that I have 8's in the doors. Any shallow (read: less than 75mm deep) speaker should fit there with minor modifications to the door metal and back of the door trim.
