so whats 'rice' then?

Rice is a term used to describe parts attached to vehicles that are non-stock or that didn't come with the car, and that usually don't help the car's performance in any way shape or form, but that sometimes make the car look hotted up or different.

"...complete with a drain pipe sized exhaust, enormous supercar wing, hsv style grey bits on the skirts, bonnet scoop (red) and turbo stickers..." (Seen on a green Hyundai excel with a huge body kit and very small mags)

In this case we have a car that is already grossly underpowered, being weighed down by a poxy body kit & wing and losing torque through an oversized exhaust. To add insult to injury, the owner has chosen to attach turbo stickers (to a non turbo car) and a non functional bonnet scoop painted a different colour to the bonnet. He even has chromed 13 inch mags. It's not just riced up a bit, it's rice rich, it scores very high on the rice-ometer.
This car has been thoroughly riced with no regard for performance.

The owner is now known as a rice monger, and you have my full permission to laugh at him. :p

So let us hear your rice stories... :Poke:

u know whats dumb about half these guys... theyve got v8s that are uglier than rice cars. A lot of v8s is in my opinion r pretty close to rice (make a lot of noise and dont go too fast)... i'd hate to think how many of our cars they would call ricey... but oh well

Those rice cops are pretty strict

I'd be booked for :

 Clear Side Indicators

 Painted Calipers

 Red Silicon Wiper Blades

On the other hand, its all about having your rice to performance ratio the right way up. The rice metioned above just turns into a blur when you own all the hotted up commies and falcons at the lights.

Someone down near where I live has been trying to sell a VL crummodore for about 3 years now.

It has one of the excel shopping trolley/supra wannabee rear wing stuck in the middle of its boot. It has about 30cm clear on each side. He has painted the bonnet matt black, and black stripes on the roof. I think matt black was chosen possibley to imitate carbon fibre bonnet.

I havent seen it for a few weeks, but if I see it again I will take a photo of it so you can all laugh with me.

I had a mate with a Stock White VC Commodore.

It had a 163 ci Blue Motor, and Square-cut timing Gears.
(The 163 is the smallest stock engine in the Red-Blue-Black Holden Motor Series. Square-cut timing gears sound hot, but Don't hold the Cam in properly. You end up with your Cam shooting out through your Radiator. Helicial-Cut Gears don't allow any movement at all, but don't sound "As Tough")

He'd go down to the Dandy Drags and before he got there he'd disconnect the Bonnet Release Cable.

He'd pull up, everyone would hear the Whine of the Square-cut gears and assume he had a Turbo, and ask for a look. He'd go to open the bonnet, There'd be a *twang* as the cable hit something, and he'd pretend that he just snapped the Bonnet Release Cable, and apologise.

Hahah was the 163 the 4cyl model? It had 13 inch rims with 165/75/13 or something tyres. Looked great on the wagons. (please note sarcasm)

I once read an article about it where the author had said:

"...due to a hike in petrol prices in the early 80's Holden decided they needed an economical option in the commodore range.. however they didn't just use any old motor to furfill this plan, they picked a real old crapper... "

Salvo
25th April 2002, 05:40 PM
Nah, the 163 was a 6-cyl.

Early Holden 6cyl Engines were always offered in two different sizes per model; 149/179-HP (Late EJ, EH, HD), 161/186-186s (HR, HK, HG, HT), 163/202 (HQ, HJ, HZ, WB/VB), 2.2/3.0 (WB, VC, VH, VK)

Anyway, back On-Topic.

Other tricks they used to do at the Dandy Drags was put Brake-Hose Clamps on the Rear Brake-lines, disconnect the Brake-lights and do burn-outs with the foot on the brake. If that's not Rice, I don't know waht is.

Back in the 70's, Browns Road, Noble Park was the local drag strip and everyone would bring along thier custom Drag Cars. Even the Police had one and used to race against the "Citizens" on this suburban Street. They'd bring along a christmas tree made out of a Traffic Light and marshall the event every Thursday Night. Now Browns Road has Speed Humps and Round-abouts.

I wish I had my scanner. I just opened up an old max power mag and there is a readers car in there that has tons of those playboy bunny head stickers all over the car in strategic spots.

FREAK..

The car is crap as well.

Oh, btw, does any body work count as rice? Or is there a rice to performance ratio that you can apply?

Damon

Salvo
26th April 2002, 08:13 PM
I s'pose Bodywork which doesn't add to the Performance or Practicability of the Vehicle would be considered Rice.

A HSV Spoiler on a Maloo wouldn't be Rice, Nor a Panel-van canopy on Mambo's SS "Sandman" Ute.
The holes I have cut in my N14 Q Bumper Facia isn't Rice because they're there to house the Aftermarket Foglights.
The vents in the facia, in front of an Excel's Wheels are not rice because they're the only way you can keep the POS brakes cool.

Side Skirts on just about any car is rice, except those ugly stainless steel ones on B&S Utes and High-performance Models like Nismos, WRXs and HSVs. They serve a Purpose.

Most Boot-spoilers are Rice, especially those big stainless steel ones on the back of Bogan Commodores (Me sings along to Area 7's "Nobody Likes a Bogan").

Foglights that are left on on bright sunny days are Rice... Turn them off and they're no longer rice.

An exhaust resonator, or HotDog, is Rice because it makes the Car sound like it's got something beefier in it. It has no performance value. No most cases it actually deteriorates performance.

A Meshed Grille is not Rice because it serves the purpose of keeping big insects out of the engine bay. If there is a design eched into the Mesh, then it could be considered Rice.

This is an incomplete list, and is just my Interpretation of what Rice is. I think a little bit of Rice doesn't hurt, if we didn't care what out cars looked like, we'd all be driving XD Falcons and Volvos. :)

if rice is defined as any car with a bit that doesnt add performance or functionality then almost every car out there is rice...

is there such a thing as a performance car without pointless bits... the wrx must be really rice then cause its got big foggies that u cant even turn on... a really big hole in the bumper for the non existent fmic, side skirts and spoiler that dont do anything, a momo steering wheel (well if it was on a civic it would be rice wouldnt it?) despite the fact that they are pretty damn quick they must still be rice eh!

how about the n14 sss and rnn14 gtir... skirts, front lip, wheel trim (fake flared guards!?), spoiler etc etc

what a bout the type-r, supra, etc etc

in MY opinion rice is making your car out to be something it is NOT and is the same thing as a sleeper but with opposite objectives

eg rice is
- sticking turbo/nos/etc stickers/badges on ur car when it isnt them
- badging ur car as a SSS when its a plus (saw one the other day - caught out from his plain n15 headlights -> no black surround)
- bodykit on a car with a family car engine
- fake metal petrol covers (ie those stickers ppl put on their petrol covers!!???
- car lowered with its wheels inside the arches

rice is NOT
- massive bodykit on 600hp beast!
- turbo badge on a turbo car
- 3 ft high adjustable spoiler on race car
- car lowered for ideal road or track use

anyway u get the idea

Stock wrx's aren't rice! They are rally cars, and the bits you might call rice on other cars are there for a reason on the rex.
The 99-00 models had large STi wings for downforce, the skirts for aerodynamics. The foggies do turn on and they have adjustable beam angles, via screws. The large hole in the front bar is for the radiator, but it also leaves room for the front mount that is fitted to most rally and track cars, the smaller holes are brake ducts. The steering wheel! That Momo tiller is a very comfy piece of equipment and serves the important purpose of steering the car.
And above all, these bits are original equipment on the car, so they're not really classed as rice anyway.

I certainly have some rice happening - mags, clear winkers and painted callipers. But no one laughs at me at the lights, so while these bits don't add to performance they are probably quite forgivable.

I think the important thing is that the performance ratio is the right way up, and it certainly is on most rexes, sss's and gti-r's. ;)

A couple of weeks ago I was in the City outside a pub having a quiet beer and ciggie, when all of a sudden this low horrible noise was getting louder at louder.

I turned around to see a Mitsubishi Lancer Coupe 1.8, Done to the hilt with jumbo jet wings, a spoiler that belonged on a Mack truck, and Fluro lights coming out of every angle of the car.

And this guy had both windows down with Techno pumping.

I dont think he realized that people were looking at his car, Not because it was hot looking, but because he was a moving flashing Christmas Tree.

All rice and No spice.

Lol.
How much do they spend on those lancers? Rice isn't cheap...
Makes you wonder if they'd pooled all the cash in the first place, maybe they could have bought a real car?

Heh.. I turned the music up to what I thought was pretty loud one day, wound all the windows down and got out of the car to hear what it sounded like from outside. Once I'd shut the door I could hardly hear it. :D

naturaldisasta
29th April 2002, 09:12 AM
After spending hundreds on sound deadening, I would be dismayed to hear too much from outside the car with the windows down.

That why I laugh when I see cars cruising past with the back windows down and they still don't sound as loud as mine cranked with the windows up haha..

I still do the tune test on sundays at carparks with the windows down a little in the front, just so I know how much I am annoying the guy in front.

The best sticker I ever saw was "If it aint got bass, dont even try"

I think I might start handing them out.

Yes commies would have o be the worst, saya Vk commie half the car pink, half the car white, gaurds torn away by doing burnouts all the time, big arse aeroplane wing on it's boot, idling like it had 3 cylinders working out of 8, and hrmm yeah wanna be drag boy.

Excels bodykitted, STD wheels, tips, and hten thye expect to drag the SSS cause it has more plastic/fiberglass weighing it down .. Now that's funny.

Rotary boy's that sound like aeroplane's, idle at 5000 rpm, and struggle to change gears on cold mornings .. The joy's of rotary.

Pulsars base model, with SSS stickers (cut himself, not the porper one's), 15" mags, RPM stickers and the like all over it, and yeah, the power off a 1.6. Ha.

SSS's have enough go to be able to be riced up lots. Unlike Excels.

Only this one had a very high lift kit and huge 4wd wheels, not to mention a motor that was waay to powerful for the chassis. What a %$^# moron. :vomit:

Then last night I saw a Honda Integra with a huge meshed front bar - it actually looked pretty good cept it had what looked like dim spotlights, but they turned out to be those chunky round reverse light capsuals you'd use on a trailer. :D

I riced up my wifes Barina 5- door ( swift shape) before i got the N15.

*15in TSW rims ( bought 2nd hand and fitted myself)
*removal of all badges ( did myself)
*fitment of Gti rear hatch spoiler ( did myself)
*meshed up front grille ( did myself)
*3" chrome tip on exhaust ( did myself)
*fitment of Bali immitation leather 12"MOMO steering wheel and Nikken gear knob (did myself)
*2.5"cold air feed from front bar up to standard air cleaner unit. (It's the 1994 carby motor [did myself])
*RED LINE OIL sticker on front windscreen ( yeah as you may have guessed, i was forced to book it into the workshop for that to be fitted!)

TOTAL RICE UP!!!!!!

But it's actually a pretty cool looking little machine ( no, don't have pics. the car is white, so use your imagination) and it often fools the best of them and it keeps up with cars like ( dare i say it?) stock Excels. Saw a Yellow Toyota Cressida Today. It was being driven by a Tosser w/ Texta-tattoos on his forearms, a sleeveless Black T-Shirt, and too much wax in his hair.
